Reference to cycling tanks
Hi (again) Cat, I have a 100L (22 Gallon) tank and I cycled it with 3 platys. They are not that sensitive to ammonia as far as I am aware, they just are not as good at coping with it as other fish (e.g. barbs). I think that as long as the tank is not too small or there is not more than a third of the recommended stocking capability then they should be fine because the concentration of it will not be too high. (Adam2307 07:33, 25 March 2008 (CDT))
----
I think we should possibly leave the description as is, i actively encourage fishless cycling anyway, it's easier and causes less stress and long-term damage to any fish. --Cat 07:43, 25 March 2008 (CDT)

----
:I agree about fishless cycling...this was a while ago, before I really knew what i was doing. Could we, however, make sure this conversation is left on the discussion page so that people can make up their own minds after reading it? (Adam2307 12:05, 25 March 2008 (CDT))

I removed "Those that remove chlorine." as a type of water conditioner because it is my understanding that any chemical that can convert chlorine to salt can also convert chloramine to salt. Some manufacturers just don't state that on their label because the product doesn't remove ammonia. If any chemists can prove otherwise it should be put back in. --Tash 03:41, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

----

Chloramine is two chemicals. So if a product claims to remove chloramine it needs to remove both chemicals surely? IMHO the product is telling a moral untruth in not mentioning that its 'removed the chloramine' and left the ammonia behind. The consumer thinks the product has made the water safe. When it's not.

All basic dechlorinators remove chlorine from chloramine so leave the ammonia behind. But then these products don't claim to remove chloramine either.

I've reworded the first type of conditioner to emphasize this point.

Don't try this unless you are a very experienced fish keeper (5 yrs or more)
It's only my opinion but its very hard!
Adam2307 12:47, 15 May 2008 (CDT)

"potting soil (or "top soil")" - potting soil =/= top soil. Potting soil is usually a peaty mix with some vermiculite or perlite, perhaps with some (nitrogen heavy) fertilizer. Top soil = loam, mineral fines plus organic material. Huw Powell 21:30, 15 February 2011 (EST)

This whole thing reads as loony to me, but that's just me. In places it says no water changes required to provide trace elements for fish (huh?) in others, it refers to water changes. I suspect some more of a "review of idea" tone might be useful here - as Adam said above. Huw Powell 21:35, 15 February 2011 (EST)
::No one has answered the "potting soil vs. top soil" question. Which is it? Huw Powell 22:43, 27 February 2011 (EST)
:::A quick peruse over the links show the same nomenclature issue. You are correct in that potting soil with vermiculite or fertlizer should NOT but used. I think it would be best to recommend only top soil with a low amount of organics (wood chips etc.). --Brian 08:47, 28 February 2011 (EST)
Not hard
Can't imagine why he thinks it's hard.
I've been making up Walstad tanks for years now and the difference it makes is incredible and so easy to set up.
I set up a 500L tank for a mate in an afternoon and had fish in it that same evening.

In an ideal Walstad you don't need to do water changes for a very long time. Typically 6 months. This is because there is no build up of toxins that you get with a traditional aquarium.
But there are times when you may wish to reduce the level of tannins in the water or the water is becoming too hard as you top up the tank as water evaporates. All valid reasons for a WC. But these are still rare events. I've got several tanks on the go right now that I've not performed a WC for over 6 months. I top up with de-ionised water.

Regarding trace elements, it has long been established that fish, like all animals, need trace elements in their food to stay healthy. But it is still a 'recent' discovery that fish also pick up elements from the water. In a traditional tank they don't get these. Which is why Tetra and others sell additional minerals in bottle form as a supplement. But in a Walstad tank as the bogwood or peat in the soil dissolves, it releases these trace elements and so the fish tend to grow better.
People are always commenting on the size of my fish and how healthy they look. My mollies for example are over 5 years old.
When I raised a goldfish in a walstad tank, it grew to 10" within 2 years.

Works for me. :-)
--Quatermass 13:10, 17 February 2011 (EST)

I think I'm going to give it a try when I set-up a tank in my cube here, wanted to put RCS in it. --Brian 14:15, 17 February 2011 (EST)
:Neither 5 year old mollies or a 10" 2 year old goldfish are difficult, in fact they are almost trivial, if you will forgive my wording, accomplishments. No one has yet even addressed the issue of potting soil versus topsoil. 6 months without a water change is also no big deal - unless you try to add new fish. Deionised water is not an "easy" product to find, at least where I live. Why don't fish get trace elements from the water in a "traditional" tank?
tank size
The tank size can be considerably smaller, assuming that you aren't cramming them together. Each inch of fish length will need about 2 gallons, so a common sized fish will need 12-16 gallons to stay happy, although they are tolerant of less.
----
not sure of the practicalities of keeping an 8" cichlid in a 12-16 gallon tank, that sounds a bit silly to me. --Cat 18:43, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Does anyone know if the blue crayfish needs air pump in his tank? I was told he did not but I just want to make sure. Does anyone have, please help?

----
Welcome to The Aquarium Wiki.

This question is fairly hard to answer. No aquarium needs an air pump with attached airstone, you do need to keep the surface of the water agitated so O2 can be exchanged and the cray can breath. If you have a HOB filter you should be fine. If you have no other filter in the water, you shuold add a sponge filter (which will include an air stone). --Brian 23:21, 24 February 2008 (CST)

Can you keep these fish with siamesse fighting fish?
----
I would say no. The Siamese Fighting Fish is a tropical fish preferring temps over 75F and fairly still water as they do not cope well in strong currents. These minnows however prefer cooler temperatures and strong currents. It would be difficult to find a happy medium. --Cat 18:48, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
----
I would keep them at 22 -23 C and I also made tha aquarium so that about 1/4 has a stronger current, and 3/4 has a slow current. I used thick and strong plants that stop moast of the current. I'm actually asking if the siamese fish would attack them.
----
22-23C is a bit too cool for Bettas. They would be too quick for a long-finned Betta to catch and having a split current is tricky, Bettas are curious and will venture into the area with the stronger current and then get blown back - which can cause injury if they get pushed into decor or tangled in long plants. Bettas are not vicious killers generally - they usually end up more of a victim to fin nippers or larger bullies. I've had a few Bettas that were a bit murderous (one that killed several attempts at breeding him, another that liked to sneak up on Corys and take chunks out of their fins) but most are fairly meek unless the tankmates look like other Bettas such as Guppies --Cat 15:44, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
----
I don't have souch decor or plants in there those fins can get caught. Also I've seen people having betas in similar tanks like me and they were curious at first, but later when they found out what hapens thay did't go into the current. also i had to see these fish at lower temperatures(20C) and they survived. It's only about 1C lower than optimal so I'll try. If the bettas woun't be happy or if something goes wrong, they're going into a tank from one of my friends.
----
If you were going to do it anyway why bother asking? le sigh. --Cat 21:42, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
----
I diceded not to have them with bettas, but with shrimps, snails and Corydoras adolfoi

how much per gallon do you use to raise the Ph 0.5?

----
You didn't leave your name....

Hard to say, a lot depends on your existing KH of the water.

To raise the KH without raising the GH, add sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), commonly known as baking soda.

1/2 teaspoon per 100 Liters raises the KH by about 1 dH. Sodium bicarbonate drives the pH towards an equilibrium value of 8.2.

So try half this dosage if your KH is low. :-)

what would be useful to link to here would be a detailed scientific explanation on why freshwater fish do not need salt and what happens in detail to them if salt is added regularly, and visa versa for saltwater fish, and brackish fish, or is this somewhere else on the wiki? I don't know the answer otherwise I'd post it up. i just keep seeing more and more posts, on forums & yahoo answers, with people adding salt regularly to their goldfish tank for example. AND the difference, if any, between "aquarium salt" (interpet aqualibrium salt for example) and "marine salt" (for saltwater tanks..) --Cat 07:20, 4 December 2007 (CST)

----
Salt alters the osmotic pressure on the animal. So an article on OP is required.
It's been on my list to do for some months.

I too have seen people add salt to freshwater fish, mainly in the knowledge from the 'old days' that it does prevents a level of fungus, bacteria and parasite growth. But then so would proper regular water changes/care. ;-)

With modern knowledge and care I believe it's an unnatural state to put an animal in.
Adding Bogwood and certain decaying leafs to the tank is the modern way to achieve the same state. I now always have a piece of wood in my tanks. Seems to work.

'Aquarium salt' is usually one or maybe two salts, sodium mainly.
Marine salt actually contains a lot of different salts and may also include over 50 trace elements as well.
i love bogwood, i have at least one piece in all my tanks too! thanks for that. i was reading about aqualibrium (of which i have but only use when fish are sick) its only recently clicked its a "ph buffer" as well...ohh my brain hurts! --Cat 09:12, 4 December 2007 (CST)
The linked article "All Salt Was Not Created Equal" by Robert T. Ricketts is no longer functional, and the Kent Marine link goes to the proper site, but gives a 404 error. Aphotic Phoenix 09:24, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
:update, right now the Template:ppm yields 1000. Although percentages are more natural for people (I think), listing something that is 100ppm as a percentage is to may be to small (0.01%) for people to handle. --Brian 14:22, 17 February 2011 (EST)
::Ppm is the preferred unit. 1% is a lot of salt, by the way. The oceans run 2.8-3.5%, IIRC.
has anyone used this to cycle a tank? i don't believe bacteria can instantly grow in 4 days like the featured article says...kind of objecting to it's claims as a front page article! --Cat 11:38, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
----
When I start a new tank I seed the filter with material from and old tank and transfer some plants and I get less then a week-long cycle as long as I keep them (the bacteria) well fed. I don't doubt it can do that, but I suspect a 4day cycle from a bottle is due to the bottle containing more then just bacteria. --Brian 12:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
----
i seed from other tanks too, but for a beginner with no old tank or old filter media, could this be offering false hope? --Cat 12:05, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
:IMHO If they actaully are reading about ways to speed up a cycle, then they know of the cycle and it puts them way ahead of the game for newbies. --Brian 12:53, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

I use SafeStart all the time
This product does work.

The bacteria is present in huge numbers in the bottle and gets down to work right away.
Other products like golden oldie 'Cycle' didn't really work as they're based on the wrong species of bacteria! Though I should say that the makers of Cycle had to finally change their formula this month as the more advanced products do allow you to put fish in immediately. Cycle can't claim that. In fact Cycle doesn't claim any time scale!

The Scientist, Dr. Tim Hovanec, who invented SafeStart (really Bio-Spira) has moved on and invented 'One and Only' which is slightly better than SafeStart. Stability by SeaChem works too. I've used this as well.
I set up all my tanks with these products and have never lost a fish.

If you read the Beginners article I mention a high-tech method which combines one of these modern seeding bottles with Prime or Awquel+. If a beginner over stocks/overfeeds their new tank then not even the bacteria-in-a-bottle will save the animal. But having a Ammonia and Nitrite neutraliser liquid in the water means its very hard for the Owner to mess things up.

If you want to read more about this subject then you've missed the fantastic articles there was on the MarineLand web site before they got bought out by Tetra. But luckily these have been archived by IAWM.

You have read my article? - Bacteria bottles, do they work?. :-)

--Quatermass 13:14, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

----
i have read the article, i didn't realise safe start was bio spira, i have heard more positive things towards bio spira. maybe we should have a cycle race (hehe), bottled bacteria vs fish vs pure ammonia vs fish food/shrimp vs seeded, see which cycles first! --Cat 13:36, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

No Contest
It's a no-brainer. Do it the AquariumWiki way and you can set up a tank with all brand new equipment and put fish in it in less than 3 hours and the animals don't suffer at all. The length of time it takes to cycle becomes irrelevent. :-)

--Quatermass 15:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
----
i still wouldn't do it that way, mainly because very few fish thrive in "new" tanks anyway heh. i'm going to stick to my cloning and waiting 3 weeks for it to establish properly, i still find it difficult to believe that all the bacteria needed to successfully eat up the nasties can be instantly added to the media. even when i did use bio spira back in the day when i had new tanks it still took a long while for all the levels in the water to read right. --Cat 15:25, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

How does it work?
Can someone explain how bacteria can survive in a bottle for a whole year without being fed? Do they go into a dormant phase or something? This product just does not pass the logic test.
Bulrush 14:17, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Dormancy
If you go to the One and Only web site, you'll find articles about this.

I quote from Dr. Tim's web site:

"A common misconception about bacteria in general is that they die if they are not fed.

From a human being point of view this sounds perfectly reasonable: if you don’t eat, you die. However, bacteria are not human beings. Bacteria operate much differently than people and have a variety of ways to deal with those times when resources are not available for them to grow and reproduce.

Some bacteria when stressed (from say lack of nutrients) form spores and go into a resting stage waiting for conditions to improve. Nitrifiers do not form spores but have other mechanisms to deal with nutrient deficient periods. For nitrifiers, one way to deal with stressful conditions is to forming a protective ‘shield” called EPS.

EPS stands for extracellular polymeric substances and is, in simplistic terms, an organic protective shield that research shows inhibits various organisms from attacking and breaking open the cell wall of nitrifiers. Nitrifiers belong to a very old line of bacteria (millions of years) and they have developed ways to cope with very long periods of “drought”. Because the nitrifiers in DrTim’s One & Only are grown on a substrate they can form EPS when needed and last 6 to 12 months in a bottle."

This explains why when I switched off my large filter overnight (like I did by accident last week) my nitrifying bacteria didn't all die on me. Just briefly rested I suppose. The next day the water quality of my tank was fine. I was surprised at the time.

I personally don't believe SafeStart uses this EPS method. It seems to be based on Bio-Spira and that used a nitrogen source and low temperatures to keep the bacteria alive. SafeStart just doesn't care to mention this little useful fact to get extra life out of it.

Also let's be clear, after 12 months don't expect to find in the 'One and Only' bottle the same amount of bacteria you'd find in it from day one. Some bacterial losses are inevitable. --Quatermass 16:19, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
